About the Role

We are seeking an experienced PowerBuilder Developer to support and maintain a legacy PowerBuilder application while actively contributing to a strategic migration initiative. This is a contract engagement with an initial period of ramp-up as the developer familiarizes themselves with a codebase that has been in a stable, low-change state for over a year.

The successful candidate will split their time between maintaining the existing PowerBuilder system and performing broader SQL development work, with a longer-term focus on planning and executing migration off PowerBuilder.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Maintain and support a PowerBuilder 12.5 application serving a third line of business.
  • Analyze, write, and optimize complex SQL queries against an Oracle backend.
  • Design, develop, and standardize database views to enable consistent, reusable, and performant data access patterns.
  • Refactor legacy SQL logic into efficient, maintainable queries and views to support ongoing system modernization.
  • Work with off-site data warehouses accessed via SQL queries (no on-premise data).
  • Manage and maintain source code through Microsoft Azure DevOps.
  • Ability to configure and manage your own development environment independently.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally and communicate clearly with business and technical stakeholders throughout the migration lifecycle.

Experience and Skills

Required Experience:

  • Experience working in legacy PowerBuilder environments, including hands-on experience with PowerBuilder 12.5.
  • Strong Oracle SQL programming skills with a focus on performance and optimization.
  • Experience designing and maintaining database views, stored procedures, and standardized data access patterns.
  • Experience refactoring or improving legacy SQL codebases.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Azure DevOps for source control.
  • Ability to independently set up and configure development environments.
  • Strong communication skills — ability to work with both business and technical audiences.
  • Experience in the healthcare industry is a plus.
Soft Skills:
  • Technically fluent but able to communicate clearly in business terms — comfortable presenting technical decisions to both engineering teams and executive stakeholders
  • Collaborative team player who builds alignment across cross-functional teams, including business analysts, QA, and product owners.
  • Self-directed with strong ownership mentality — able to manage priorities and deliver in a fast-moving environment.
